How we chose our books

The librarian who
	  created Everyone Outside

To find picture books on nature themes featuring BIPOC children, the librarian behind Everyone Outside scoured book lists prepared by children’s publishers, the Cooperative Children’s Book Center in Madison, WI, and other popular book recommendation websites. Everyone Outside does not feature every picture book with a non-White child in nature - that might be impossible! - but we do feature a lot of them, as published through the year 2019. These suggestions are organized by topic or theme for easy browsing.

In the world of children’s literature, #ownvoices is a big deal. Own Voices books are those that are written about a character who shares traits with the author, such as race, ethnicity, gender, or religion. Picture books on Everyone Outside that are #ownvoices are marked with a star next to their title. If only the author or illustrator represents the #ownvoices component, the star will appear next to their name and not next to the title.
